![]() ![]() With integrated filters, a sound card, and macro FX controls, we’re already feeling the RGAS kick in. Take the enormously successful Kontrol S4, shave off the deck controls and two of the channels, and you’ve got the basis behind the Z1. If you don't need them (like me), S5 and S8 are both great choices, while S5 is off the market for two years now.Native Instruments today is announcing a brand new controller designed to fit right in alongside the X1 and F1 – the Traktor Kontrol Z1. If you plan on using the jog wheels, the only sensible options are either an S4, or an S3+X1. NI offers the Kontrol X1 to make up for this. While remixing is the real deal of DJing, FX are way more accessible. S3 has remix decks but it's still low on FX. What you can do is successively play songs and that's it, but it doesn't sound like that's what you are up to. Summarized, you can't put in your individual style. You are very limited in the use of FX, you don't have remix decks and you can't play three songs at once. ![]() ![]() Now to your question: Traktor Kontrol S2 is extremely limited. Even if you get $200 for a gig once in a month it's still not a fair payment for the work you need to put in. ![]() DJing is an amazing hobby and for a handful of people very profitable, but it's not a job to occasionally make a few bucks because you are extremely underpaid. If you want to be a professional, don't be an amateur. Looking to potentially gain occasional DJ work alongside playing in bands and other jobs after uni (Gotta grind multiple jobs in the industry, you know how it is) And if you really wanted the effects down the road, like someone else here mentioned, you can always get the X1. If you were only doing it, like once every couple of months or so, I'd say yeah, go for the S2, but since it sounds like that not going to be the plan, I'd definitely go with at least the S3. On the flipside, I like I said before, I really feel like you'd grow out of the S2 pretty quickly if you're planning on being semi serious about this hobby. I feel the main selling point that the S4 has over the S3 are the effects, and if you're not really using them, then it's fine saving money here imo. The main FXs on the mixer right now are perfectly fine, and, I could be wrong here, but if you really wanted to, I think you can map different effects to the buttons on the deck in the software. I'm probably going to get hate for this, people are saying you don't get the the effects with the S3 that you get with the S4, but honestly, at the level I'm at right now, and truthfully the foreseeable future, I don't think I (or you) really need those. When I first started, it was less than a month until I started to dive into using multiple decks. IMO, depends what type of music you're mixing, but you're going to grow out of 2 decks EXTREMELY quickly. I ended up going with the S3 and I honestly completely love it, so happy with my decision.
